When he asked Beethoven about the opening motif of the Fifth Symphony, the composer is said to have replied: "This is the sound of fate knocking at the door."įor Jens Dufner, research assistant at the Beethoven-Haus in Bonn, this concept of fate is problematic: "Anton Schindler was a shady figure," said Dufner. It is a central work for the Beethovenfest, which this year has as its motto "Fate." The fact that the symphony bears this epithet is above all due to Beethoven's secretary and biographer, Anton Schindler. 5 in C minor from 1808 has gone down in music history as the Symphony of Fate. Not to mention the proceeds from the right to perform his works. If Beethoven had been alive today, he would have become rich through royalties alone: mobile phone ringtones, musical arrangements of all styles, prints of his music on bags, cups and umbrellas. I really will not buy anything from a door to door salesman, but I also cannot bring myself to be rude to someone trying to earn a living.Da-Da-Da-DUM - hardly any succession of notes is as famous around the world as the one at the beginning of Ludwig van Beethoven's Fifth Symphony. I printed one off anyway, if this doesn’t work I don’t know what I’ll do. The consensus seems to be that the people who have no soliciting signs on their doors have those because they lack the ability to say no to salespeople so salespeople ignore the signs. I went online looking for no soliciting signs and found some very interesting forums. I respect that they have a job/calling to do but I would like some respect in my home. In order for me to see who is at the door the person at the door sees me and I just can’t bring myself to be rude enough to walk away without opening the door. People say ignore them, don’t answer the door. I am currently moving rooms around in my home and making repeated trips from the upstairs of the house, down two flights of stairs to the basement and I’m not at all happy about being interrupted again and again. I am all for religious freedom, and I applaud anyone who’s faith is so strong that they are driven to go door to door and share that faith, I’m just not interested. I’m not LDS so I don’t really know but young men come knocking on my door looking for money, money I do not owe them mind you. Not including Saturday and Sunday of course, we do get a break then, well except one Sunday a month because it was something called Fast Sunday. I may be more frustrated than usual by this because I have averaged three solicitors everyday for a solid week. Or at least we were, until the doorbell started ringing. This has been a pretty mild winter for Utah, temperatures this week are in the high 40’s and we are all enjoying our break from snow and freezing weather. Our neighbors are kind and considerate, being at home is a joy.Īt least until the weather warms up, then the solicitors come out in force. I want my home to be welcoming and comforting, my family’s sanctuary from the world. How do you preserve the peacefulness and tranquility of your home? While this does not fall exactly under housekeeping it is still an important part of keeping house.
